The Mother of All Marketing Mavens: Evann Rodgers, CMO and Co-Founder of Moss Mill Brewing Company

Get to know Moss Mill’s marketing machine in this second post of our Women in Brew series. Missed the first post? No worries. You can still learn about our previously profiled lovely lab lady here.

If there was ever a woman bringing home the bacon and serving it up in a pan (paired with the perfect IPA, obvi) it’s Evann Rodgers. Evann’s official title at Moss Mill Brewing Company is Chief Marketing Officer, but for her, the “M” in CMO could mean a lot things. For example:

  • Mama: Evann and her husband Nick started Moss Mill when their first child was a newborn. Their second was welcomed into the world just a few weeks ago (pssst—congrats, guys!).
  • Marketing Maven: Not only does Evann handle the marketing for Moss Mill, but she also has a full-time job in medical device marketing.
  • Multi-talented: Evann takes on whatever Moss Mill needs, even things outside her comfort zone—like bookkeeping and running the tasting room.

We could go on and on, but trust us when we say that this powerhouse of a woman could probably run the world if she wanted to—and still be home in time to make dinner. She and Moss Mill are welcome additions to the Agapi family, since they share our values of hard work, unstoppable passion for family, and—dare we say it?—no small bit of bad-assery.  

Like a lot of folks perfecting the pint, Evann never imagined herself in brew. Nick, however, has been brewing for eight years and had a long-held dream of opening a brewery. With his brew passion and her marketing savvy, they knew they’d make it a success—even with a newborn in tow. The result has been a unique brewing company that’s quickly become a neighborhood favorite.

The craft brewery world can be a crowded one, but just as we saw at the CBC, it’s not a highly competitive one. Small breweries help each other in a way that seems to defy common sense, making them more of a support system than a group of cutthroat competitors. Moss Mill has taken this to a whole new level. Evann and Nick have designed Moss Mill to be very collaboration-centric and community-focused. They involve the community in decisions about what kinds of beer they should brew next and bring in new partners each month, but the most impressive example of their emphasis on collaboration is in their lab. They partner with others to get lab equipment you don’t normally see in a brewery their size, then share that equipment with competitors and community— at cost. This way, everyone is better.

Evann also has some pretty awesome advice to help us mere mortals: “Nobody is going to hand you anything—working hard is important in this industry. People value sweat equity and there’s no way to fake that.” We couldn’t agree more!
